STUDENT GUARDIAN VISA
Student Guardian Visa

When a child studies in Australia, it is often helpful if a parent or a approved guardian is nearby. That person can manage the daily needs, help with a place to live, and stay close during hard days. The Student Guardian Visa, subclass 590, is for people who meet the set conditions. It lets them come with an international student and provide care while the student is enrolled.
Trusted Immigration Services, once called RS Global Immigration, supports parents, legal guardians and other eligible relatives. We help families read the visa needs, then get their forms ready with care.
We started our migration work in 2018. Since then, we have handled student cases, guardian matters, skilled pathways, employer sponsorship, partner visas, permanent residency, visitor visas, and review work. Our office is in Lalor, Victoria. From there, we serve families across Melbourne. It covers areas like Epping, Thomastown, Reservoir, Bundoora, Mill Park, South Morang and Craigieburn, plus nearby suburbs too.
Answer: To qualify as a student guardian, you must be a parent, legal custodian, or eligible relative (aged 21 or older) nominated by the student’s parents. The primary international student must be under 18 years of age (or older in exceptional circumstances due to medical or care needs) and holding a Student Visa (Subclass 500).
Answer: Under strict Visa Condition 8538, a Subclass 590 holder cannot leave Australia without the student visa holder unless alternative accommodation and welfare arrangements approved by the student’s school (or the Department of Home Affairs) are formally put in place before departure. Leaving the child unattended will result in visa cancellation for both guardian and student.
Answer: No. Under Visa Condition 8101, Student Guardian Visa holders are strictly prohibited from undertaking any paid or unpaid work in Australia. The sole purpose of this visa is to provide accommodation, care, and emotional support to the minor student.
Answer: Applicants must prove access to sufficient funds covering first-year living expenses for themselves ($29,710) plus the primary student’s tuition fees and living costs. Alternatively, evidence can be provided showing a spouse or partner’s personal annual income meets the threshold set by Home Affairs (minimum AUD $102,500).
Answer: Yes. Guardian visa holders are permitted to study an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) or short training courses for up to 3 months total duration. For any study extending beyond 3 months, you must apply for your own Student Visa (Subclass 500).
Answer: Generally, you cannot bring dependent children under 6 years old, except under rare and exceptional circumstances. Children aged 6 or older can accompany you only if they apply for their own Student Visa (Subclass 500) and enroll in a CRICOS-registered school in Melbourne.
Since 2018, Trusted Immigration Services has worked across multiple Australian visa categories. This broader migration experience helps us look at the guardian application alongside the student’s visa, welfare arrangements and family circumstances rather than treating the application as an isolated form-filling exercise.
Migration advice is provided by Director Ginni Kocher (MARN: 1803892), a registered migration agent and member of the Migration Institute of Australia (MIA). We aim for correct paperwork, up to date rules, proper conduct, and clear updates for families.
Every family has different circumstances. We take time to understand the student’s age, education arrangements, relationship with the proposed guardian, accommodation plans and the guardian’s circumstances before recommending an application strategy.
Families living around Lalor, Epping, Thomastown, Reservoir, Bundoora, Mill Park and nearby suburbs can access face-to-face consultations at our Victorian office. Online consultations can also make the service accessible to families located elsewhere.
We offer end-to-end management for all standard and complex citizenship pathways across Victoria.
This primary pathway is designed for permanent residents living in Australia who meet the residence and character criteria. We systematically audit your travel logs, tax history, and identification papers to ensure 100% compliance with statutory requirements.
If you were born overseas to at least one parent who had Australian citizenship at the moment you were born, you may qualify for citizenship by descent. We help parents right across Melbourne with the overseas registration process for their children, quickly, and without unnecessary back and forth.
If you have spent extended periods overseas, have minor traffic offenses or criminal records, or require administrative appeals, our specialized Australian citizenship consultant in Melbourne team crafts robust submissions. We present mitigating evidence under section 24 and section 22 of the Act to address character or physical presence exemptions.
Welfare arrangements are a key part of the process when the student is under 18. Depending on the circumstances, arrangements may involve a Form 157N nomination, a CAAW arrangement through the education provider, or another approved welfare arrangement.
The proposed guardian must be able to support themselves and the student during the stay. Evidence concerning finances, accommodation and general welfare arrangements may be required to demonstrate that the student’s needs can be properly met.
Applicants may need to satisfy health and character requirements and provide supporting evidence such as police certificates where applicable. We assess the circumstances early so families know which documents may need to be obtained before lodgement.
Step 1 – Eligibility and Family Circumstance Assessment
We start by reviewing the student’s Student Visa situation, age, education arrangements and proposed guardian relationship. This helps identify potential welfare, sponsorship and documentation issues before the application is prepared.
Step 2 – Prepare Guardian and Student Documents
Depending on the circumstances, supporting documents may include passports, proof of relationship, custody evidence, financial records, welfare documents and other evidence requested for the application. Home Affairs specifically identifies evidence such as Form 157N and proof of relationship in relevant cases.
Step 3 – Lodge the Subclass 590 Application
Once the supporting evidence has been reviewed and the application is ready, we assist with lodgement and ensure the information provided is consistent across the relevant documents and forms.
Step 4 – Respond to Further Requests
If immigration authorities request additional information or evidence, we help you understand the request and prepare an appropriate response rather than leaving families to manage unexpected correspondence alone.
Welfare documentation needs to match the student’s circumstances and education provider arrangements. Missing or inconsistent information can create unnecessary questions, so we review the proposed arrangements before submitting the application.
A guardian needs to demonstrate the ability to support themselves and the student appropriately. We help applicants understand which financial documents can be relevant to their circumstances and how they should be presented.
Parents, legal custodians and eligible relatives have different evidentiary circumstances. Documents such as birth certificates, custody evidence and Form 157N may be required depending on who is applying and who has responsibility for the child.
